When I joined the Volunteers in Power (VIP) club at my school, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The volunteer opportunities, charity events and fundraisers VIP hosted didn’t really interest me. As volunteer events flew by, I grew to desire more than community-service hours; I desired to contribute to my community. As the current Communications/External Affairs executive for VIP, working with organizations such as the toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS) has been common. In events such as the VIP organized TTC Poverty Challenge, I discussed event plans with the TTC, the TFSS and my school, promoted volunteer opportunities to students (email, announcements, posters), and supervised the 113 participating VIP members who helped feed over 2000 breakfast-deprived students the GTA. Working with outside organizations has become second nature and these experiences and skills should prove to be important networking tools when meeting new faces at Rotman.
As a sophomore, I became a devoted writer for my school newspaper, CORE, and magazine, Enigma. Seeing students walk down hallways with my work, frantically skimming through my sections, covering sports, finance and world news, brought me joy. Musically, I formed my own band, musical Youtube channel, joined the Guitar Ensemble, Full Choir and Gospel Choir and performed in numerous school music events. Currently, I am taking piano and vocal lessons to expand my realms as musician. These artistic passions can only grow as I mature, meet new people, gain access to more resources at Rotman.
Clearly, I have whole-heartedly developed commitment in becoming an engaged contributor in my community and I hope this commitment can extend to the Rotman Community. Rotman will offer me a goldmine of learning opportunities and will morph me into an active, educated and motivated young man who can tackle any challenge and succeed in the world of commerce.
